Growing Pains

I"ll get the boring stuff out of the way first....

September 3rd – September 8th (High volume / high intensity week for me – it wasn’t planned):

Monday: Fight Gone Bad and a horrible walking thruster WOD
Tuesday: a good metcon WOD
Wednesday: a prowler WOD and a chipper
Friday: a hang snatch PR and then another horrible thrusters WOD
Saturday: Danny and then a fun tag team chipper

September 10th – 12th  (I"m  pretty beat up from last week, so I’m taking it light this week):

Monday: Annie
Tuesday: Clean and Push Press TABATA and 400m sprints
Wed: Waiter walk WOD and goat work: front squats, Dubs, and ring dips

Ok, so now that the boring stuff is out of the way, we’ll move on….

My box runs Crossfit based on hour-long classes: they begin with a warm-up, follow with a skill, and finish with a WOD.  I enjoy this format of Crossfit; however, I’ve really got nothing to compare it to.  I joined my box when it opened: a member from the very beginning.  It’s been a wonderful experience watching the box, its members, the community, and its coaches grow.  I’m sure I’ve made friend for life there.  The hour long class format worked extremely well in the beginning:  all it’s members were new and class sizes were small(er).  With the membership up from 1.5 years ago, and most of them “newbies”, I’m left wondering if this format of Crossfit is still right for me.  Currently, I feel that programming at my box is geared towards “newbies” and fitting 20+ people into a class.   Furthermore, “coaching” in those gigantic classes focuses on teaching new members – as it should – the skills they need to be a Crossfitter……but it leaves members who are no longer considered “newbies”  with little to no direction on how to improve.

Soooooooo…..This leaves me asking: “What can I expect from my box and its coaches?”   As its members grow, should I expect the box to grow with it?  Should I expect an increase in the number of classes offered with a cap on the number of people in a class? Should there be a mandatory beginners class, or should I expect an “advanced” class offering where things like muscle ups and handstand walks are the skill?  Should there be open gym time offered, where one can come and work on personal “goats” ?

Or am I being a whiney bitch and asking too much?!?!?!  Seriously.  Somebody REALLY needs to let me know if I am….

I’m hoping these “Growing pains” are temporary, and I’m really just expecting too much: time will tell.  I absolutely love my box, the coaches (most of the time), and the people I’ve met there; however, I’m absolutely dreading the coming winter when the garage doors lower making the space even smaller…….

And so it begins...

Hmmmm - where to begin....

I guess I should start by telling you that this is going to be a place for me to vent, rant, rejoice, cry, and track ALL the ups and downs of my experiences with Crossfit....and the community that comes along with it.

I'll keep my first post short and sweet, with a little introduction about myself. I guess I've always been active: a swimmer in high school, and then a gym rat in university and the (many) years following that.

A friend of mine convinced me to take an Olympic lifting course at my local YMCA a few years ago, and,  I WAS HOOKED!   I picked up the movements quickly, and I then spent some time working on the lifts (alone!) after the course ended.  I even did a couple of oly lifting competitions.  When another friend of mine opened a box about a year and a half ago, I apprehensively joined:  I loved my oly lifting, but I wanted just a little bit  more variety than what I was doing.  This should go without saying -- I absolutely loved EVERYTHING about Crossfit and had found a new passion after my first week!

So that brings us to today:  I'm an average crossfitter with a competitive drive....and I hope you like my blog!
